Archaeology advice

The Work of the Archaeology Team

The Archaeology and Heritage unit is based within the County Hall, Northallerton, North Yorkshire and is part of North Yorkshire County Council.

North Yorkshire is rich in archaeological remains from many different periods. Our knowledge of the past is growing all the time and helps us to understand why the countryside looks the way that it does today.

The Archaeology Team gathers information about the past and tries to prevent the unnecessary destruction of archaeological sites. These sites are often very fragile and are irreplaceable. It is important to preserve our heritage for future generations.
